Getting a new sign doesn’t have to be complicated. At Dawn’s Sign Tech, we’re here for all of your sign inquiries, no matter the design. Here are some questions we frequently receive.
1. How Long Does It Take to Make a Sign?
Typically, most signs will take 1-3 weeks in the off-season (winter) and 2-4 weeks during peak season. As for more specialty signs, including carves and extruded aluminum frames, expect 4-6 weeks (extruded) and 4-8 weeks (carved) due to low inventory & labor intensity.
2. Do I Need a Permit for My Sign?
While you don’t need a permit for an interior sign, it’s best to notify your landlord of your plans before installation.
For all exterior signs, you will need a permit. We recommend reviewing your town/ city’s sign policies, as some areas require a Design Review Board or Historic Commission approval before you can apply for a permit.
If your sign is outside the limits of what the town allows, we will have to go to the Zoning Board of Appeals (usually about 120 day process and approx. $1000 in additional fees) before we can apply for a permit.
3. What Should My Sign Be Made Of?
It depends! Your budget, design, and town’s policies are all factors that contribute to your sign’s material.
4. What is the Best “Bang for Your Buck?”
You want the most out of your sign without spending too much? Go for dimensional acrylic letters. These letters can be painted to match your color scheme, and are extremely flexible, with a metal laminate (interior only). You can also illuminate them; Dawn’s Signs carries halo (back lit), front lit and side lit options.
5. What is the Difference Between Design Services and Layouts?
Design services: Someone needs a logo designed from scratch. For this kind of work, we usually refer our clients to a graphic designer. (Why? We’re busy over here making signs!!)
Layouts: Taking your existing logo and adding some tweaks to it (with your permission, of course!). If a standard layout takes 15-20 minutes, we will not charge you. However, if there are multiple revisions, we will charge after 20 minutes.
6. Why Can’t You Give Me a Quick Price Over The Phone?
It depends on the product. For instance, if you’re looking to get something that has a standard size, material, and cost, such as a coroplast yard sign, we can give you a price right on the spot. But if you don’t know the exact size, material or how high it needs to be installed, we’ll need to do a little more research before we can give you an estimated cost.
7. Is Vehicle Lettering and Window Lettering Removable?
Yes, vehicle lettering and window lettering can be removed.
8. How Do You Take Care of an Exterior Sign?
We recommend regular cleaning, weatherproofing, and scheduling maintenance check-ups.
9. How Will I Know What Material I Should Get?
That’s what we’re here for. If you have a design and budget, but no material, we can make recommendations. We have samples of everything here so you can have a good close look and ask additional questions that will eventually bring you to the sign you imagined.
